Tarp springs are housed in the base of the tarp arm and are activated when the tarp is rolled up. A bent tab in the center of the spiral spring latches onto the tarp system pivot pin, and the tail of the spring latches onto a rod or ledge in the tarp arm and as the tarp is rolled up, the tarp arms push against the tail of the spring, causing a build up of tension. If you are leaving your truck for an extended time, it is best to deploy the tarp so the tarp arms springs are in a relaxed state.
When you hear the term "4 spring" or "5 spring", it refers to the number of springs mounted on each side of a spring loaded tarp system. They are not to be confused with Underbody Springs, which utilize a single coil spring mounted underneath the dump body.
Our dump truck tarp springs are electronically coated, which protects them from premature rust, but eventually tarp springs will wear out. It is best to replace all springs at once to ensure even tension on both sides of your tarp system.
